Jonathan Edwards’ Resolutions – #3

Resolved, if ever I shall fall and grow dull, so as to neglect to keep any part of these Resolutions, to repent of all I can remember, when I come to myself again.

This resolution is particularly difficult for me to expound upon, as it is an area in my life which I am currently growing through. The concept of repentance reveals quite a few things about us; we are heading the wrong way, God has shown us the right way, and God is asking us to turn, to not only turn our backs to the unfruitful paths and processes we’ve been following, but also to pursue Him. Repentance involves not only turning, but pursuing; both an acknowledgment of sin, and a moving away from it [and towards Jesus].

This resolution also reveals to us that likely there will be times where we need to realign ourselves with God [as Edwards says, a ‘coming to [himself] again’). In our society, it is so easy to get distracted, inundated with information, and numbed to the things of God. We seek satisfaction and joy in all things apart from Him and then get frustrated when we are unfulfilled. I pray not only for myself in this, but for you as well, that we would each be granted clarity through God’s grace upon us; grant, I ask, that You would reveal the ways in which we have turned from you and are pursuing unrighteousness, and that we will be empowered by Your Spirit, God, to turn from these ways and realign ourselves with You.

May we not be afraid to examine ourselves and see areas which don’t line up according to Your scriptures.

God, help us simplify our lives to draw closer to You; may dependence, urgency, and a clarity of mind motivate up deeper into Your Truths, that we may be refined.
